Washing machine not heating water: causes and what to do
When a washing machine does not heat the water, the door glass stays cold during the wash, the laundry is not cleaned properly, and the programme may stop within roughly the first half hour with a heating error — for example HE on Samsung and LG, F19 on Bosch, F07 on Indesit, E61 on Electrolux.
First make sure it really is a fault: Eco programmes heat the water less than the panel shows, and that is normal. If the water does not heat on a normal 60 °C programme, the heating element or the temperature sensor has most likely failed, and that is a job for a technician.
Likely causes
- an Eco programme or a low temperature: in the Eco 40-60 programme the actual water temperature may differ from the stated one (Beko manuals say so, for example), and the wash takes longer;
- a failed heating element — Bosch names it as the main cause and notes that it is usually confirmed by an error code;
- a faulty temperature sensor (NTC thermistor) or a corroded sensor connector;
- a thick layer of limescale on the element and the sensor in hard water;
- broken wiring, a faulty heater relay or a faulty control board.
Safe steps you can try
There is little you can do yourself — mainly rule out a settings mistake:
- Check the programme and temperature: make sure Eco, a cold wash or 20–30 °C is not selected.
- Run Cotton 60 °C with a small load and after 20–30 minutes carefully put your palm on the door glass: with the heater working it becomes noticeably warm.
- If the display shows a heating error, unplug the machine for a few minutes and start the programme again — see whether the code returns.
- If the error comes back, avoid hot washes until the repair and do not open the machine: the heating element is inside the cabinet and connected to 220 V.
When to call a technician
Call a technician if the water does not heat on a normal 60 °C programme, the programme stops with a heating code, or the laundry does not come out fresh after a hot wash. Bosch states plainly that a heating element fault is not one you can repair yourself.
The technician will test the heating element, the temperature sensor and the wiring with a multimeter, replace the element or sensor if needed and clear the limescale. It is usually a short repair on site, and a MasService technician names the price before starting.
Frequently asked questions
Why is the water cold on the Eco programme?
Eco programmes save energy: the water is heated less and the wash runs longer. Manufacturers state that the actual temperature may differ from the one shown — it is not a fault.
Can I wash if the machine does not heat the water?
You can wash in cold water, but the laundry comes out less clean and the detergent dissolves poorly. If the machine stops with a heating code, it is better not to use it until it is repaired.
Why do heating elements burn out?
A common cause is limescale: it stops heat transferring to the water, so the element overheats. Regular descaling and a water softener in hard-water areas help.
