Washing machine door will not open: what to do

A washing machine door locks during the wash and does not open straight away: the lock releases it only when the programme has finished, there is no water in the drum and the glass is not too hot. Samsung, for example, states that the door will not open until 3 minutes after the machine has stopped or the power has gone off.

So first wait a few minutes. If the door still will not open, the usual reasons are water left in the drum, the child lock being on, or a faulty door lock.

Likely causes

  • the programme has not finished or is paused;
  • the release time after stopping has not passed yet (3 minutes on Samsung);
  • water is left in the drum: the machine did not drain because of a blockage or an error;
  • after a hot wash the door is still hot — the lock waits for it to cool down;
  • the child lock is on;
  • there was a power cut;
  • a faulty door lock (door interlock), its wiring or the board.

Safe steps you can try

  1. Make sure the programme has finished. If the wash is paused, let it finish, or stop the programme and run Drain.
  2. Wait a few minutes after it stops, until the lock releases and the door lock light goes out.
  3. Check whether the child lock symbol is lit and switch it off as your manual describes — usually by holding the buttons shown.
  4. If there is water in the drum, run Drain. If it does not drain, unplug the machine and drain the water through the emergency hose or the pump filter at the bottom.
  5. After a power cut, unplug the machine, wait a few minutes — as Beko advises — and switch it on again.
  6. Do not force the handle: you can break the handle or the lock.

When to call a technician

Call a technician if there is no water in the drum, the child lock is off and several minutes have passed but the door still will not open — or if, the other way round, the door will not lock and the machine will not start. Bosch states that a faulty door lock is not a fault you can repair yourself.

A MasService technician will open the door carefully, test the lock, the handle and the wiring and replace the faulty part, naming the price before starting.

Frequently asked questions

Is there an emergency door release?

Many machines have an emergency release cord or lever, usually behind the pump filter flap. Use it only after draining the water and unplugging the machine; your model's manual shows where it is.

Why does the door not open right after the wash?

It is by design: the lock releases the door with a delay so that it cannot be opened while the drum is turning or there is hot water inside. Waiting a few minutes is usually enough.

The door will not close — what should I do?

Check that laundry is not in the way and the drum is not overloaded: Bosch advises taking some items out and checking that no sock is caught between the door and the cabinet. If the lock does not catch, it needs a repair.
