Washing machine not taking detergent or softener: causes and what to do

If detergent stays in the drawer after the wash and water sits in the softener compartment, the drawer itself is usually to blame. Electrolux names two main causes: incorrect detergent dosing and a dirty detergent drawer. Samsung adds low water pressure and detergent poured into the wrong compartment or above the line.

Cleaning the drawer and dosing correctly usually helps. If the drawer is clean but water reaches it weakly or not at all, the inlet valve needs checking.

Likely causes

  • a dirty drawer: detergent residue blocks the compartments and stops the water flushing the powder out (Electrolux, Samsung);
  • the wrong dose: detergent or softener filled above the stated maximum — Samsung notes that an overfilled compartment can release softener early and leave residue;
  • detergent in the wrong compartment — for example, softener not in its own slot (Samsung);
  • low water pressure: the water comes in slowly and flushes the drawer poorly (Samsung);
  • pods or gels in a drawer not designed for them — Electrolux advises putting capsules straight into the drum;
  • the machine is not level — Samsung advises levelling it so the drawer works properly;
  • a faulty inlet valve, or the valve section that feeds that compartment.

Safe steps you can try

  1. Take out the drawer: pull it firmly towards you; on some models you have to press the catch down first (Electrolux).
  2. Remove the top part of the softener compartment (the siphon cap) and rinse all compartments under warm running water, scrubbing residue off with a soft brush (Electrolux, Samsung).
  3. Clean the drawer recess in the machine — top and bottom — with a small brush (Electrolux).
  4. Put the drawer back and run a rinse programme with no laundry — as Electrolux and Samsung advise.
  5. Dose detergent as the pack says and do not fill softener above the MAX mark (Electrolux, Samsung).
  6. Put capsules straight into the drum, not into the drawer (Electrolux).
  7. Check the pressure: the water tap must be fully open and the inlet hose not kinked (Samsung).
  8. Leave the drawer slightly open after every wash so it can dry (Electrolux).

When to call a technician

Call a technician if the drawer is clean, the dose is right and the pressure is normal, but the machine still does not take the detergent — no water reaches the drawer at all, or only one compartment gets water. The inlet valve is probably faulty or its filter is blocked. If the drawer is cracked or broken, Electrolux advises replacing the whole drawer.

A MasService technician will check the valve and the water supply and name the price before starting the repair.

Frequently asked questions

Can I put pods in the drawer?

Electrolux warns that capsules in drawers not designed for them may cause leaks from the drawer. Put pods straight into the drum.

How often should I clean the detergent drawer?

Electrolux advises cleaning the drawer regularly so residue does not build up, and leaving it slightly open after every wash so it can dry.

Why does the softener go straight away instead of in the rinse?

Samsung explains that an overfilled compartment can release softener early. Do not fill above the line, and check it is in its own compartment.
