Detergent, white marks or stains left on clothes after washing: causes
If white marks or traces of powder stay on clothes after washing, the detergent is usually not being rinsed out in time. Bosch names the most obvious cause — too much detergent — and three more: an overloaded drum, a kinked or blocked drain hose and a blocked filter or pump.
Stains can be of another kind too: Samsung explains that greasy marks come from fabric softener, and yellow or rust-coloured ones from iron in the water or rusty pipes. The colour of the stain helps find the cause.
Likely causes
- too much detergent — in the drawer or in a dosing ball (Bosch);
- an overloaded drum: the laundry moves around as one mass, water cannot circulate and the detergent is not rinsed away (Bosch);
- a kinked or blocked drain hose: the water and detergent do not drain from the drum properly (Bosch);
- a blocked filter or pump — rinsing becomes poor (Bosch);
- greasy marks — softener poured straight onto clothes, into the wrong compartment, above the MAX line or in excess (Samsung);
- dull grey or white marks — hard water, or a reaction between softener, detergent and suds (Samsung);
- yellow or rust-coloured stains — iron or manganese in the water, rusty pipes or a rusty water heater (Samsung);
- dark mould stains — laundry left damp for too long (Samsung);
- pens, markers or items that bleed dye in the drum or pockets (Samsung).
Safe steps you can try
- Dose detergent as the pack says and do not go over the MAX line in the drawer (Samsung).
- Do not overload the drum — the laundry must move freely (Bosch).
- Check the drain hose and straighten any kinks. To test for a blockage, take the hose off the sink trap, put its end in a bucket and run the drain programme: if water comes slowly or not at all, clean the hose and the trap (Bosch).
- Clean the drain pump filter and remove anything blocking the impeller (Bosch).
- Clean the detergent drawer (Samsung).
- Check pockets and the drum for pens, markers and items that bleed dye (Samsung).
- Take the laundry out as soon as the cycle ends (Samsung).
- Check the machine itself: Samsung suggests an empty cycle with no detergent. If marks appear in the drum, run two more empty cycles; if they remain after the third, you need service. If the empty cycles are clean, the cause is the additives or the laundry itself.
When to call a technician
Call a technician if marks remain after three empty cycles without detergent, if the machine drains poorly although the filter and hose are clean, or if rust or damage appears in the drum. The internal hoses may be blocked, the pump faulty or the tub damaged.
A MasService technician will check the drain, the pump and the tub and name the price before starting the repair.
Frequently asked questions
Why are there white marks on dark clothes?
Usually the detergent is not being rinsed out: there is too much of it, the drum is overloaded or the drain works poorly — as Bosch explains. Samsung adds hard water and softener mixing with detergent.
Where do greasy stains after washing come from?
Samsung explains that they usually come from softener poured straight onto clothes, into the wrong compartment, above the MAX line or in excess. The right dose in the right compartment almost always solves it.
Why are there rust-coloured stains on the laundry?
Samsung names the most common cause: iron or manganese in the water, or rusty pipes or a rusty water heater. If the machine itself is rusting, you need a technician.
