Tumble dryer not drying or taking too long: what to do

If a tumble dryer leaves the laundry damp or takes much longer than usual, the cause is most often maintenance: a blocked fluff filter, a dirty condenser or heat pump filter, or a full condensed-water container. Bosch states plainly that an uncleaned heat exchanger extends the drying time and spoils the result.

Before checking, bear in mind that warm laundry can feel damp straight after the programme — Beko suggests letting it cool and checking again.

Likely causes

  • a blocked fluff filter in the door — Bosch and Beko advise cleaning it after every cycle;
  • a dirty condenser (condenser dryers) or heat pump filter drawer behind the kickplate;
  • a full water container — Bosch warns that the next programme may then stop;
  • an overloaded drum — Beko notes that it stops the laundry drying completely;
  • a programme that does not suit the type of laundry;
  • a dirty humidity sensor: limescale and detergent residue build up on it;
  • on vented dryers, a blocked or squashed vent hose (LG shows this with codes d80/d90/d95);
  • a faulty heater, heat pump, temperature sensor or board — this needs a repair.

Safe steps you can try

Before cleaning, switch the dryer off and let it cool — Bosch warns that it can still be hot after long use.

  1. Clean the fluff filter in the door and its housing; rinse a badly blocked filter in warm water and let it dry completely.
  2. Empty the water container and push it back in until it clicks.
  3. If your model's condenser is removable, clean it: rinse it from all sides with a jet of water, use nothing hard or sharp, and let it drip dry. Bosch advises doing this once a month. Rinse the heat pump filter drawer as your manual describes; Bosch does not advise cleaning the heat pump itself.
  4. Wipe the humidity sensor inside the drum (the metal strips) with the rough side of a sponge.
  5. Load less laundry and choose the programme by the care labels.
  6. On a vented dryer, check that the vent hose is not squashed or clogged with fluff.

When to call a technician

Call a technician if the dryer still does not dry after cleaning the filters, the condenser and the sensor, the air in the drum is cold, the programme stops with an error code, or the water container stays empty after drying. These point to a faulty heater, heat pump, condensate pump or sensors.

A MasService technician will test the heating system and the sensors and name the price before the repair.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the laundry feel damp after drying?

Straight after the programme warm laundry can feel damp. Beko suggests letting it cool: if it is still wet, check the filters, the condenser and the load size.

How often should I clean the dryer filters?

The fluff filter after every cycle, the water container emptied after every programme, and the condenser once a month (Bosch advice for models without self-cleaning).

The dryer takes too long — is it a fault?

Usually not: blocked filters, a dirty condenser or overloading are the usual causes. If drying time does not improve after cleaning, the dryer needs a diagnosis.
